Thomas C. McLelland opened his carriage and custom saddle shop in Danville, Virginia in 1892. Business in the early 1900's was booming, he had all the business he could handle. By 1920, the need for horse-drawn equipment was dwindling. WWI had come to a close and Tom's only son, Clarence, returned home with military honors. Tom's untimely death in 1929 left the business to Clarence. The great depression hit just 3 months later. But, Clarence saw the times for what they were, and built a steady saddlery, boot and shoe repair business that managed to provide a good living for his young family. Clarence's son Jim spent his afternoons delivering the repair work his dad and team of craftsmen turned out. When Jim wasn't busy, he was at the shop soaking up all the knowledge he could. In 1946, Jim returned from a 4 year hitch in the navy and soon his childhood dream of being a saddlemaker started to come true. In 1958, Jim, his wife Ruby and their 3 small children pulled up roots and moved to Lake Worth, Florida. Jim rebuilt his business in the same way his Grandfather, Tom, did by offering the local horsemen beautiful custom saddles. Now the 3 children, Ted, Debbie and Perry carry on this 4th generation saddlery. Ted Jr. and a dedicated staff now add a 5th generation.
The McLelland family is happy to be entering the new millennium thanks to our customers who are very much appreciated. |
